Marble is a blanket term that is often used for its relatives, including limestone, onyx and travertine. All of these stones are originally derived from limestone, though marble has undergone metamorphosis.
Marble has long been valued for its rich palette of colors.
Chief Characteristics: Marble is known for its beauty, one of the most richly colored and patterned stones
Origin: Metamorphic limestone
Location: Canada, Italy, Germany, Spain, U.S. and worldwide
Composition: Calcite & dolomite
Ideal Location in the Home: Building and ornamental: Foyer, bathroom wall, floor, vanity top, tub deck, shower, fireplace hearth
Finishes: Marble is most often polished for a mirror-like shine. Recently, marble has been honed for a more subtle, “less-than-polished” look. This lends a less formal appearance and doesn’t show marks as readily or wear patterns on floors.
